An SPD diverts transient overvoltages — for example those induced by lightning in the solar panel cables — to earth, protecting the inverter, charge controller and panels from damage.
The 2P model is rated for 500 V DC and the 3P model for 1000 V DC; both have a 40 kA maximum discharge current (Imax). The SPD's voltage must suit the maximum voltage of your panel strings.
Imax is the largest surge current the SPD can divert to earth once without failing. A higher value means more headroom against strong surges such as lightning effects.
